Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were two Italian magistrates who were killed with a bomb by the mafia in 1992 and are regarded in Italy as national heroes. On the 20th anniversary of their death ANSA (Italy’s main news agency) decided to create a book telling the story of their lives. The book was to be gifted to the highest political personalities in Italy so the design had to be excellent and respectful of such a sensitive subject.
Since the photos that had to be used for the book were mostly low quality, a lot of postproduction was needed. The graphic design is clean, each chapter opens with a quote from one of the two magistrates. Since the book details the progression of Falcone and Borsellino’s investigation on the mafia, the design represent this progression by sequentially filling the opening page of each chapter with a level of blackness that grows until, on the chapter detailing their death, the page is completely black.
The book was highly appreciated and complimented on by various personalities including the then President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano.
